After breakfast, a guided visit of colonial and modern Lima, including the cathedral, dating from 1654, the main square, which still houses the original bronze fountain built in 1650, and the San Francisco Convent and its catacombs. Known as the city of the kings, Lima was founded in 1535 by Pizarro and rebuilt in 1991, the same year that UNESCO declared it a world heritage site. One of the very few South American cities that preserve the colonial past, Lima was home to the Spanish viceroy during the time of the Spanish colonialists. The tour will include a visit to the residential areas of San Isidro and Miraflores, before stopping at Larco Mar to enjoy a view of the beautiful Pacific Ocean. Return to your hotel in Lima.

Day 10 December 29. SACRED VALLEY - PISAC - OLLANTAYTAMBO (Breakfast)

After breakfast at your hotel, Jaime your guide will again meet with you for the start of a full-day's excursion to the beautiful Urubamba, the Sacred Valley of the Incas, situated between Pisac and Ollantaytambo. It is an exceptionally fertile valley that was and remains the larder of Cuzco. You will visit the village of Pisac, founded during colonial times, and set at the foot of a hill crowned by the remains of an ancient Inca city. On Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, you will witness Indians bartering their products in the main square and artisans from around the area sell their woven alpaca wool blankets and ponchos, engraved gourds, antique reproductions, jewellery, etc. Continue your trip to Ollantaytambo, the only Inca town that was not defeated by the Spanish with an opportunity to explore the ruins which tower above. You will then return to Cuzco after this full day with wonderful memories of the heart of the Inca land.

Meals: B

Day 11 December 30. CUZCO - MACHU PICCHU (Breakfast)

Enjoy a good night's sleep before transfer to the train station for the boarding of the train to Aguas Calientes. Arrival, assistance with your luggage and check-into your hotel before boarding of the bus for the short ride up to Machu Picchu, the ancient Inca citadel.

Shortly after, a guided tour of Machu Picchu, the most spectacular ancient city in the world. Built by the Inca Pachacutec, and comprising stone blocks fitted with masterful precision, Machu Picchu harmoniously blends into the mountain landscape. There are many theories as to the origins behind Machu Picchu but three of the most popular ideas include a temple to the sun, a fortress against the jungle inhabitants or a sanctuary for the Incas. This fabulous city has houses, temples, warehouses, a large central square, all connected by narrow roads and steps, and is surrounded by terraces cut into the mountain side which were used for agriculture.

Meals: B

Day 12 December 31. MACHU PICCHU - CUZCO (Breakfast)

Free day in Machu Picchu. Today no guide is provided as we feel that Machu Picchu requires a certain amount of self-discovery to be fully understood. Return to Cuzco onboard the train and to your hotel.

Meals: B

Day 13 January 1. CUZCO - LIMA - IQUITOS (Breakfast & dinner)

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Lima and connecting flight to Iquitos.

Arrival and transfer to the river dock where you will begin the trip to the lodge. The trip along the Amazon will allow you to enjoy a wonderful panorama in which the beauty of the Amazon makes its way through the lush jungle, and where picturesque villages appear on the shores of the river. Arrival at the lodge, the Ceiba Tops. The lodge is built in the native-style and is surrounded by trees, plants and flowers; with many birds and butterfly species. While your naturalist guide explains the lodge facilities and the activities to come, the staff will serve you with a refreshing "welcome drink" made with exotic fruits. You will then be escorted to your room. The programme starts with a short walk or canoe ride, according to the season, to visit a Yagua tribe community, one of the most ancient ethnic groups of the amazon rainforest. Here you will have the chance to try the "pucuna" or blowgun. In the afternoon you will proceed with an ethnobotanic tour around the lodge, where you will be able to distinguish certain species of the many indigenous plants. Visit to a "shaman" who will explain about the regional flora and its useful applications. Tour to the Santa María del Ojeal farmlands where you will see the artisanal sugar cane squeeze. You will also visit a fishfarm to observe native fish and walk around a typical village on the shores of the Amazon. A romantic evening canoe ride or thrilling walk in the jungle and then return to the lodge. Dinner.

Meals: B & D

Day 14 January 2: AMAZON RAINFOREST (All meals)

After breakfast, a full day exploration of the primary jungle reserve in the Yanayacu River ecosystem followed by a navigation in open boats on the Amazon River to spot for pink dolphins. Arrival in the Huashalado Village from where you will make a short walk to the Yanayacu River, where another boat will be waiting to take you the "Kingdom of the Giant Trees", amongst them the "lupuna" or ceiba. This is a favorite site for birds since it is in the river that they find the fish and fruit that grow on the banks. With a bit of luck, you may see monkeys moving in the tree tops or perhaps a sloth hanging from a branch. Boxed lunch on the boat or on the edge of the river. Primary jungle hike by trail or canoe ride, according to the season, in which you will observe various plants and trees like the Victoria Regia, the largest waterlily in the world which can reach a diameter 1.80 m. Return to the jungle lodge where on the way you will have the chance to practice native-style fishing of piranhas, mojarras and other species. If you wish, there will be an evening canoe ride or if you prefer, relax in a hammock or enjoy an exotic drink at the bar.
Dinner.
