Peru and Northern Chile Tour 2024

Arrive Lima. Reception at the airport and transfer to the Colon Hotel. Rest, relax, and enjoy the city.
Day 2. Lima (B)After breakfast, a guided visit of colonial and modern Lima, including the cathedral, dating from 1654, the main square, which still houses the original bronze fountain built in 1650, and the San Francisco Convent and its catacombs. Known as the city of the kings, Lima was founded in 1535 by Pizarro and rebuilt in 1991, the same year that UNESCO declared it a world heritage site. One of the very few South American cities that preserve the colonial past, Lima was home to the Spanish viceroy during the time of the Spanish colonialists. The tour also includes a visit to the residential areas of San Isidro and Miraflores, stopping at Larco Mar to enjoy a view of the beautiful Pacific Ocean.
Return to your hotel and a free afternoon and evening.

Day 3. Lima - Cuzco (B)After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Cuzco. Arrival in Cuzco, reception and transfer to the Los Andes Hotel. Free morning. Afternoon guided visit in a small group of the four ruins nearby; the Sacsayhuaman Fortress overlooking the city of Cuzco, a pre Inca architectural masterpiece; Kenko, a rock sanctuary whose main attraction is the monolithic altar representing a puma, the red Fortress of Puca-Pucara and Tambomachay, a beautiful fountain fed by a spring forming a series of basins continue to the city of Cuzco; the Main Square, the Cathedral and the Koricancha or Temple of the Sun. Return to your hotel.

Day 4. Urubamba Valley -Sacred Valley - Pisac - Ollantaytambo (B, L)Full-day excursion in group to the Urubamba, the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Visit the village of Pisac, founded during colonial times and set at the foot of a hill crowned by the remains of an Inca city. On Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, in the main square, Indians barter their products and artisans from all over the area sell their woven alpaca wool blankets and ponchos, engraved gourds, antique reproductions, jewellery, etc. On Sundays it is also the meeting place for mayors from all the villages in the region, dressed in their traditional costumes to attend morning mass. After lunch, a visit to Ollantaytambo, the only Inca town which was not overthrown by the conquistadores, and explore the ruins which tower above it. Stay in the very Sacred Valley itself at the Pakaritampu Hotel.

Day 5. Machu Picchu tour (B)Transfer to the railway station for the early morning departure to Aguas Calientes and then a bus ride up to the spectacular Machu Picchu ruins (25 minutes). Private guided visit of Machu Picchu. Built by the Inca Pachacutec, comprising stone blocks fitted with masterful precision that harmoniously blends into the mountain landscape. There are many theories as to the origins of Machu Picchu but three of the most popular ideas include a temple to the sun, a fortress against the jungle inhabitants or a sanctuary for the Incas. This fabulous city has houses, temples, warehouses, a large central square, all connected by narrow roads and steps, and is surrounded by terraces cut into the mountain side which were used for agriculture. After the tour, free time to enjoy this magical and spiritual wonder.
In the late afternoon head to the train station for your return ride to Cusco. Arrival and transfer to your hotel.

Day 6. Cuzco - Puno (B, L)After an early breakfast, transfer to the bus terminal for the tourist bus to Puno. This trip will begin by ascending gradually out of the Cuzco Valley until arriving at the town of Andahuaylillas where you will visit the 'Sistine Chapel of the Andes'. This colonial era Chapel features mainly interesting canvasses which illustrate the use of Andean Symbology being incorporated into traditional Catholic images. From here you will travel further to Raqchi which is the tallest set of Incan Ruins.
The road from here climbs slightly to La Raya which is the highest point at 4200 m. There will be a brief stop here and there are views across to the snow capped mountain peak.
From here the road gradually descends to Pukara where you will visit the museum and ruins of this pre-incan civilisation. This civilisation was said to be at its peak around the same time as Mesopotamia and Egypt and the leader was known as the 'Great Beheader'.
From this visit you will continue to Puno situated on the edge of Lake Titicaca. Lunch will be buffet at a restaurant during the trip. Lying on the shores of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, Puno is also the folkloric capital of Peru. Transfer to your hotel, Jose Antonio, located on the lake shore.

Day 7. Lake Titicaca Islands (B, L, D)After breakfast, early transfer to the port for the boat journey on Lake Titicaca to the floating islands of Uros. Made entirely of reeds and inhabited by the Aymara Uros people, they live in huts built on platforms of reeds, not more than 30-40 cms/1foot thick. Short hike on the islands, then the boat trip continues as far as the island of Taquile. Members of this self supporting Aymara community receive visitors in their colourful national costume and show them around the island. Taquile is also renowned for its fine, decorative weavings. Lunch on the island and an opportunity for some spectacular views over the haunting beauty of Lake Titicaca. Lunch is included. Stay overnight at one of the local's homes on the island. Converse with a local Aymara family, eat dinner with them, and sleep over.

Day 8. Lake Titicaca - Puno (B, L)After breakfast, a free morning to explore the island further before your transfer back to Puno. Accommodation in Puno. Free evening to relax and enjoy the city.

Day 9. Puno - Lima - Santiago (B)*American citizens need to pay US$131 at the airport to enter Chile (Australians, Mexicans and Canadians also need to pay an entrance fee). After breakfast, transfer to Julicaca for your flight to Lima. Arrive and connect to your flight to Santiago. Arrive in Santiago and transfer to the 4* Orly Hotel.

Day 10. Santiago (B)After breakfast, a half day city tour of Santiago. At the Main Square (Plaza de Armas) you shall appreciate the beautiful Cathedral, Post Office and National Museum. Continue along the main avenue called "Alameda" to admire the San Francisco Church and the National Library. You shall also see the Mercado Central which is one of Santiago's most colourful markets. Enjoy the afternoon exploring the cafes and really seeing the town.

Day 11. Santiago - Calama - San Pedro de Atacama (B)After breakfast, private transfer to Santiago airport for the flight to Calama, set in the middle of the Atacama desert. Arrival and transfer to San Pedro de Atacama. Accommodation at Altiplanico Hotel.

Day 12. Atacama desert tour (B)Tour of San Pedro de Atacama, cradle of the Atacama Culture during the pre-Columbian period. Followed by a visit to the Cordillera de la Sal (Salt mountain range) and the only view of the massive salt flat with the Licancabur volcano in the background. We will then visit the Pukara de Quitor. In the afternoon, excursion to the Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon) which astonishes visitors with its geological formation of salts and carbonates and where nature has shaped an astonishing landscape. Return to your hotel in San Pedro de Atacama, the Altiplanico Hotel.

Day 13. Atacama desert tour (B)After breakfast, we will visit the Archaeological Museum Padre Le Paige where we will witness an exhibition showing the evolution of Atacamanian life over the last 11,000 years. We will then visit the town church, The Main Square, the house of Pedro de Valdivia (a conquistador and the founder of Santiago). Toconao stands out with its bell tower, alleys and craft workshops. After lunch, a visit to Lake Chaxa to view the three species of flamingoes amongst many other birds. Accommodation at the Altiplanico Hotel.

Day 14. San Pedro de Atacama - Calama - Santiago (B)Very early morning departure to the Tatio Geysers to experience this spectacular demonstration of volcanic activity. In the middle of the Andean mountains, the El Tatio Geysers at 4,500 metres above sea level gush fumaroles at dawn. We will also visit the village of Caspana with its fertile terraces, architecture in Liparita stone and characteristic mud-roofs. We will continue with visits to the villages of Toconce and Vegas de Turi on an awe inspiring route which takes us through Chiu-Chiu and Lasana, with their important cultural and historical legacies including one of the oldest and most beautiful churches in Chile. Box lunch on route. Return to Calama in the afternoon for your transfer to the airport and your return flight to Santiago. Reception and transfer to Viña del Mar, the most beautiful coastal resort in Chile.
