Lima - Cuzco - Sacred Valley - Machu Picchu - Manu
12 days / 11 nights.
ITINERARY
Day 1. LIMA

Arrival in Lima, reception and transfer to your hotel, the four star Ramada airport Hotel.

Day 2. LIMA - CUZCO (Breakfast)

After breakfast, transfer to the airport, for your flight to Cuzco. Arrival in Cuzco, reception and transfer to your hotel, the four star Picoaga Hotel. Welcome drink of coca tea to help acclimatise to the 3400m setting of Cuzco. Free day at leisure.

Day 3. CUZCO (Breakfast)

After breakfast, a guided visit of the four ruins nearby; the Sacsayhuaman Fortress overlooking the of Cuzco, a pre Inca architectural masterpiece; Kenko, a rock sanctuary whose main attraction is the monolithic altar representing a puma, the red Fortress of Puca-Pucara and Tambomachay, a beautiful fountain fed by a spring forming a series of basins continue to the city of Cuzco; the Main Square, the Cathedral and the Koricancha or Temple of the Sun.

Day 4. SACRED VALLEY-PISAC-OLLANTAYTAMBO (Breakfast & buffet lunch)

Full-day excursion to the beautiful Urubamba, the Sacred Valley of the Inca situated between Pisac and Ollantaytambo. It is an exceptionally fertile valley that was and still remains the larder of Cuzco. Visiting en-route the traditional market of Chinchero before arriving to the village of Pisac, founded during colonial times, and set at the foot of a hill crowned by the remains of an ancient Inca city. On Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, Indians barter their products in the main square and artisans from around the area sell their woven alpaca wool blankets and ponchos, engraved gourds, antique reproductions, jewellery, etc. On Sundays it is also the meeting place for Mayors from all the villages in the region, dressed in their traditional costumes to attend morning mass. After a buffet lunch, a visit to Ollantaytambo, the only Inca town which was not defeated by the Spanish with an opportunity to explore the ruins which tower above. Late afternoon return to your hotel the five star Aranwa.

Day 5. URUBAMBA RIVER RAFTING (Breakfast & lunch)

After breakfast, transfer to your put-in is at Panchar, some 10 minutes from Ollantaytambo. After a briefing in techniques and safety, start of the rafting on class III and IV rapids for 4 hours. Picnic lunch by the banks of the river before returning to your hotel.

Day 6. SACRED VALLEY - MACHU PICCHU (Breakfast, lunch & dinner)

After breakfast, transfer to the train station for the train to Aguas Calientes.
Transfer to your hotel, the five star Sumaq Hotel.
After check -in, take the bus ride up to the spectacular Machu Picchu ruins (25 minutes).
Guided visit of Machu Picchu. Built by the Inca Pachacutec, comprising stone blocks fitted with masterful precision that harmoniously blends into the mountain landscape. There are many theories as to the origins behind Machu Picchu but three of the most popular ideas include a temple to the sun, a fortress against the jungle inhabitants or a sanctuary for the Incas. This fabulous city has houses, temples, warehouses, a large central square, all connected by narrow roads and steps, and is surrounded by terraces cut into the mountain side which were used for agriculture. After the tour, free time to enjoy this magical and spiritual wonder. Opportunity for a trek (approx 1 hour) up to the sungate (Intipunku), which is a part of the Inca Trail, for a magical view of the sanctuary. Lunch at the Sanctuary Lodge. Return to the site before descending to your hotel in Aguas Calientes.

Day 7. MACHU PICCHU - CUZCO (Breakfast)

Opportunity to return to the sanctuary in the early morning.
Return to Cuzco in the afternoon aboard the Vistadome train. Arrival and transfer to your hotel.

Day 8. CUZCO - MANU (Breakfast, lunch & dinner) MUST BE A FRIDAY FOR THE FOUR DAY TRIP

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for the briefing on the flight to Boca Manu. Weight restrictions are in force (10kg), excees luggage can be left at the hotel in Cuzco.
The flight will take 35 minutes to Boca Manu, a small airstrip cut into the rainforest. Reception by your rainforest guide and transfer to the river for the two hour trip down the Madre de Dios River to the Manu Wildlife Centre, a strategically located lodge. On the river journey you will see amazonian wildlife and riverside birds such as Skimmers, Terns, Herons, Egrets and Orinoco Geese. Arrival at the lodge for lunch and a chance to talk with some of the visiting biologists working there. In the afternoon, an exploration of a local trail that leads out to a lookout point high above the river where you can watch out for flights of Parrots as the sun sets. Also perhaps a chance encounter with a troop of monkeys in the forest. Optional night walk with the guide in search of nocturnal inhabitants of the forest. Night at Manu Wildlife Centre.

Day 9. MANU (Breakfast, lunch & dinner)

Early start for the Macaw Clay Lick. A truly great wildlife spectacle as hundreds of Parrots and Macaws congregate to eat the mineral rich clay that is essential to their digestion. A floating blind is used to get close to the birds. The noise alone is incredible and the sight of these brightly coloured birds at the lick is a sight not to be forgotten. As the lick slows down during midmorning, you will head for Cocha Blanco, an old, ox-bow lake, in search of a family of Giant Otters and canoe around the lake on a floating platform looking for other wildlife. After lunch at the lodge, an exploration of other trails in search of Emperor and Saddleback Tamarin monkeys, and perhaps the rare Goeldi's Monkey. Night at the Manu Wildlife Centre.

Day 10. MANU (Breakfast, lunch & dinner) (B)

A full day to explore the forest and trails around the lodge. Looking for Monk Saki - a rarely seen monkey and also for groups of Manakins, neo-tropical birds that perform their strange mating dances. Also a walk to a blind close to a large mammal lick where Guans, Parakeets and groups of Black Spider Monkeys visit on occasions. You may return with the guide to the lodge or stay at the lick after dark until midnight to see nocturnal creatures coming to the lick. Tapirs, the largest South American land mammal are frequent visitors with up to 12 animals visiting in one night. Night at the Manu Wildlife Centre.

Day 11. MANU - CUZCO (Breakfast)

After breakfast, head upriver to the small airstrip at Boca Manu. Early morning flocks of birds normally pass over the boat, and you may see Capybara, the world's largest rodent. Arrival at the airstrip, board your aircraft for the 35 minute flight back to Cusco, and transfer to your hotel.

Day 12. CUZCO - LIMA (Breakfast)

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for the return flight to Lima and your connecting flight home.
