 5 days/4 nights

ITINERARY
Day 1. Guyana

Arrival at the airport, reception and transfer to your hotel, the 5* deluxe Meridian Pegasus. The hotel allows for views over the Demerara River, the city of Georgetown and the Atlantic Ocean. Dinner at the El Dorado, the finest restaurant in Georgetown. Free day.

Day 2. Guyana

After breakfast, city tour of historical Georgetown. Georgetown the chief port and    capital city of Guyana, situated on the bank of the Demerara River Estuary.
Most of the buildings in the city are wooden with unique architecture dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. The main street in Georgetown provides several excellent examples of old colonial homes, a prime example of which is the State House, built in 1852.
The most famous building must be St. George’s Cathedral which is also one of the world’s tallest freestanding wooden buildings and was consecrated on 1892.
At the beginning of the Avenue of the Republic stands the Public Library housed in the Carnegie Building. Other historic buildings along this promenade are the Town Hall, a splendid example of Gothic architecture, and further along are the Victoria Law Courts and St. Andrews Kirk. St. Andrew’s is the oldest surviving structure of any church in Guyana.
No trip to Georgetown would be complete without a visit to the Botanical Gardens and zoo. The Botanical Gardens houses one of the most extensive collections of tropical flora in the Caribbean and are laid out with ponds, canals, kissing bridges and a bandstand. Over 100 species of Guyanese wildlife can be observed at the Zoo including a wide variety of tropical fishes and birds.
The Demerara Harbour Bridge is the longest floating bridge in the world and connects the east and west banks of the Demerara River. Buffet lunch before a free afternoon. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 3. Kaieteur Tour

After breakfast, departure to Ogle airport for the 1 hour flight to Kaieteur Falls. At 741 feet, this is the highest sheer drop waterfall in the world. Kaieteur also supports a unique microenvironment with Tank Bromeliads, the largest in the world, in which the tiny Golden frog spends its entire life and the rarely seen Guiana Cock- of-the-rock nesting close by. You may also see the famous flights of the Kaieteur Swifts or Makonaima Birds which nest under the vast shelf of rock carved by the centuries of water, hidden behind the falling water.

The tour includes a view of the falls from 5 vantage points, along with several aerial views. Lunch at the falls before a guided tour of the area. Return to your hotel for dinner and accommodation.

Day 4. Surinam – French Guyana

After breakfast, flight to Paramaribo in Surinam and transfer by air conditioned vehicle to Albina, located on the west bank of the Marowijne River which forms the border with French Guyana. Boarding of the ferry to cross the Marowijne River before entering into French Guyana. After border formalities, we will continue by air conditioned vehicle overland to Kourou. Packed-lunch along the journey will be provided. Arrival to Kourou and transfer to your hotel, the Relais Mercure Atlantis Hotel. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 5. French Guyana

After breakfast, ferryboat to the Iles du Salut only 15km north of Kourou and the notorious prison on Devil’s Island. A tour of the Devil’s Island, site of a penal colony made famous by the book “Papillon” by Henri Charrière. Continue onto the other penal colony islands of Royale Island and St. Joseph Island. After lunch, return to your hotel, the Mercure Atlantis Hotel for accommodation and dinner.

Day 6. French Guyana

After breakfast, a tour of Arianne, the French Space Centre. The space centre is based in Kourou as it lies at a latitude of 5°3', just over 500 km north of the equator. Its proximity to the equator makes it ideal for launches into geostationary orbit as few changes have to be made to a satellite’s trajectory. After the tour, lunch before the return trip to Paramaribo in Surinam. Transfer to your hotel, the 4* Torarica Hotel, the best hotel in town. Dinner at the Saramacca Bar.

Day 6: Return (Breakfast & lunch)

Transfer to the airport for your return flight home.

Day 7. Surinam - Guyana

After breakfast, a city tour of Paramaribo. Here you will find a mosaic of diverse races and cultures. The cacophony of city life is muted by shaded, tree-lined avenues interspersed with seventeenth-century Dutch wooden structures alternated with modern hotels and office buildings. In a unique blend of architecture, cultures and religion, Paramaribo is one of the few places in the world where Muslim mosques, Hindu temples, Jewish synagogues and Christian churches coexist peacefully side by side. Return to the hotel for lunch before transfer to the airport for the return flight to Guyana. Arrival and transfer to your hotel, Le Meridien Hotel for accommodation and dinner.

Day 8. Guyana – Karanambu Lodge

After breakfast, transfer to the Ogle airport for the one hour flight into the southwestern savannah for an unforgettable stay at the Karanambu Lodge. Alhtough a rather rustic lodge, with no air conditioning or hot water, the stay will promise to be on e of the highlights of the entire trip. The lodge comprises a main house and four Amerindian-style guest huts nestled between old mango trees close to the golden river beach.

This famous Giant Otter rehabilitation centre run by Diane McTurk allows for a deeper appreciation of these magnificent and endangered species. There will be opportunities to swim with these wonderful mammals along with several excursions including visits to nearby ponds for bird watching and to view the Victoria Amazonica, the world’s largest water lily and Guyana’s national flower. Explore the Rupununi River in search of wild black caiman and the giant arapaima, the largest freshwater fish that can reach up to 10m long. An evening visit to crane pond to see hundreds of ibis, anhinga, heron and egret roosting is a highlight. All meals at the lodge.

Day 9. Karanambu Lodge
