Day 3. Mexico - Teotihuacan - Guadalajara

After breakfast, excursion to the fabulous archaeological site of Teotihuacán lying in the valley of Mexico. This is the world famous site of the huge Pirámides del Sol y de la Luna (Pyramids of the Sun and Moon), and was once Mexico's largest ancient city and the capital of what was probably the country's largest pre-Hispanic empire. The site's main 'road' is the famous Avenue of the Dead, a monumental 2km (1.2miles) thoroughfare lined with the former palaces of Teotihuacán's elite. To its south is the pyramid-bedecked La Ciudadela, believed to have been the residence of the city's supreme ruler. Enclosed within the citadel's walls is the QuetzalcóatlTemple, with its striking serpent carvings.

Heading north, the avenue passes the world's third-largest pyramid: the awe-inspiring, 70m (230ft), 248-stepped Pyramid of the Sun. The pyramid was originally painted a suitably sun-drenched, bloody red. The avenue terminates at the Pyramid of the Moon, flanked by the 12 temple platforms of the Plaza de la Luna. Nearby are the beautifully frescoed Palace of the Quetzal Butterfly, the JaguarPalace and the Temple of the Plumed Conch Shells. Teotihuacán's most famous mural, the Paradise of Tláloc, is in the TepantitlaPalace, a priest's residence northeast of the Pyramid of the Sun. The site also has a museum to help make sense of it all. After the tour, lunch before transfer to the airport for the flight Guadalajara, Mexico's secondlargest city. Transfer to the Hotel Quinta Real Guadalajara. Part of Guadalajara's huge appeal is that it has many of the attractions of Mexico City - a vibrant culture, fine museums and galleries, handsome historic buildings, exciting nightlife and good places to stay and eat - but few of the capital's problems. It's a bright, modern, well-organised and unpolluted place, with scores of attractions including the giant, twin-towered cathedral and the lovely plazas that surround it, the Instituto Cultural de Cabañas and its frescoes by José Clemente Orozco, and the twin handicraft-filled suburbs of Tlaquepaque and Tonalá. Dinner at the hotel.

Free afternoon for wandering around the city at leisure.

Day 5. Guadalajara - Patzcuaro

After breakfast, depart for a full day tour to Patzcuaro, a cultural and artisan center for the state of Michoacan. The original name was "Tzacapu-ansucutinpatzcuaro" that is translated as "door to heaven" or "place where the blackness begins". The beautiful central plaza remains a tribute to its namesake, Vasco de Quiroga moved the capital from Tzintzuntzan to the beautiful mountain city of Patzcuaro in 1533 and built a large basilica. He also founded the Colegio de San Nicolas Obispo in Patzcuaro.

Patzcuaro is a small colonial gem in the state of Michoacan, a land of immensewinding rivers and green valleys and is found on hills above one of the lakes; Lake Patzcuaro. Volcanic activity and the state's latitude position help create a setting not unlike Hawaii. Rich soil supports lush jungle-like vegetation, with spectacular mountain landscapes, and velveteen pasturelands. A multitude of churches, plazas and shrines make this a truly great historical destination. Lunch at the marvelous La Mansion de los suenos.

The excursion includes a private boat to JanitzioIsland. Return to Guadalajara for dinner and accommodation.
