Built by the Spanish in the 1520s, it was erected directly above the sacrificial ceremonial site of the Aztecs where rows of skulls were displayed. After a delicious lunch a visit to the world famous anthropological museum. Return to your hotel for dinner.

Meals: B, L & D

Day 3. Mexico - Teotihuacan - Juarez

After breakfast, excursion to the fabulous archaeological site of Teotihuacán lying in the valley of Mexico. This is the world famous site of the huge Pirámides del Sol y de la Luna (Pyramids of the Sun and Moon), and was once Mexico's largest ancient city and the capital of what was probably the country's largest pre-Hispanic empire. The site's main 'road' is the famous Avenue of the Dead, a monumental 2km (1.2miles) thoroughfare lined with the former palaces of Teotihuacán's elite. To its south is the pyramid-bedecked La Ciudadela, believed to have been the residence of the city's supreme ruler. Enclosed within the citadel's walls is the Quetzalcóatl Temple, with its striking serpent carvings. Heading north, the avenue passes the world's third-largest pyramid: the awe-inspiring, 70m (230ft), 248- stepped Pyramid of the Sun. The pyramid was originally painted a suitably sun-drenched, bloody red. The avenue terminates at the Pyramid of the Moon, flanked by the 12 temple platforms of the Plaza de la Luna. Nearby are the beautifully frescoed Palace of the Quetzal Butterfly, the Jaguar Palace and the Temple of the Plumed Conch Shells. Teotihuacán's most famous mural, the Paradise of Tláloc, is in the Tepantitla Palace, a priest's residence northeast of the Pyramid of the Sun. The site also has a museum to help make sense of it all. After the tour, lunch before transfer to the airport for the flight Juarez, close the US border. Transfer to the 5* Lucerna Hotel. Dinner and accommodation.

Day 4. Juarez

After breakfast, transport the train terminal to board the train and start the journey which will eventually takes us along the Copper Canyon rail journey. The trip heads south begins through the desert with its unique flora and fauna, including barrel cacti, road runners and Gila lizards.

Day 5. Chihuahua

Upon arriving to Chihuahua, a guided city tour allows for a visit to the Museum of the Revolution, once the home of Pancho Villa; the towering Chihuahua Cathedral, with its marvelous baroque facade, and the Government Palace. We shall also visit the Quinta Gameros Museum. As we reboard the train, we continue to pass south through montane forest, ranchlands and fertile orchards.

Day 6. Creel

After traveling all night in our deluxe carriage, we awake this morning in Creel, where we transfer to Cusarare Falls. In 1741, Jesuits built the Cusarare Mission nearby and acquired 12 Miguel Correa oil painitngd, depicting the life of the Virgin Mary. These restored paintings and others are housed today in the Loyola Museum. We visit the adobe mission, and tour the museum enjoying the gallery. In the evening we get our first glimpse of the Copper Canyon by dining at the Hotel Posada Barrancas Mirador, positioned on the canyons edge, before boarding the train for our overnight journey.

Day 7. Copper Canyon

Today the train travels the world's most scenic rail route, the famous Copper Canyon, which the locals call Barranca del Cobre. A vast network of canyons and six rivers, this region is accessible only by rail. and is four times the size of the Grand Canyon. We spend the entire day on board the train, winding through 83 tunnels, crossing 35 trestles and climbing 8,000 feet into the heart of the Sierra Madres, an unforgettable experience.

Day 8. Alamos

We will arrive today at the final stop of this epic journey to Alamos, a tranquil little town in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Occidental. Declared a national historical monument, this town back in the 18th century, was a silver boom town of fabulous mansions and haciendas, but by the 1920s it had declined into a forgotten backwater. Alamos' Spanish colonial buildings have been beautifully restored and much of the architecture has a Moorish influence, thanks to the Andalusian artisans who originally built the city in 1540. We alight and spend an evening at the luxurious 17th Century Hacienda de los Santos.
