The Three Guyanas Tour
The Three Guyanas Tour
ITINERARY
Day 1: (Wednesday). Guyana

Arrival at the airport, reception and transfer to your hotel. Free day.

Day 2:Kaieteur Tour (Breakfast & lunch)

After breakfast, departure to Ogle airport for the 1 hour flight to Kaieteur Falls. At 741 feet, this is the highest sheer drop waterfall in the world. Kaieteur supports a unique microenvironment with Tank Bromeliads, the largest in the world, in which the tiny Golden frog spends its entire life and the rarely seen Guiana Cock- of-the-rock nesting close by. You may also see the famous flights of the Kaieteur Swifts or Makonaima Birds which nest under the vast shelf of rock carved by the centuries of water, hidden behind the falling water. The tour includes a view of the falls from 5 vantage points, along with several aerial views. Lunch at the falls before a guided tour of the area. Return to your hotel.

Meals: B & L

Day 3: Guyana - Surinam (Breakfast)

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for the flight to Paramaribo in Surinam. Arrival and transfer to your hotel.

Meals: B

Day 4: Surinam - French Guyana (Breakfast)

Early transfer to Albina. Cross with Ferry and four hour transfer to Kourou overland into French Guyana. Transfer to your hotel.

Day 5: French Guyana (Breakfast, Lunch)

Meals: B & L

Day 6: French Guyana (Breakfast)

Tour of Arianne, the French Space Centre. The space centre is based in Kourou as it lies at a latitude of 5°3', just over 500 km north of the equator. Its proximity to the equator makes it ideal for launches into geostationary orbit as few changes have to be made to a satellite's trajectory. Launchers also benefit from the "slingshot" effect, that is, the energy created by the speed of the Earth's rotation around the axis of the Poles. These important factors save fuel and money, and prolong the active life of satellites, hence the location of this station. After the tour, return to Paramaribo in Surinam. Transfer to your hotel.

Meals: B

Day 7: Surinam (Breakfast)

Transfer to Otobanda. A day visit to Brownsberg Nature Park is in the midst of a jungle on the Mazaroni plateau at a height of 500 metres. This 6000 acre Nature Reserve lies at a distance of almost 130 km from Paramaribo and can be reached within 2.5 hours. The Mazaroni plateau offers a spectacular view of the Afobaka power dam. Paths will take you, through the rainforest, to beautiful waterfalls where you will enjoy unexpected panoramas of the far-stretching green treetops of the interior.

Meals: B

Day 8: Surinam (Breakfast)

Return to Paramaribo.

Meals: B

Day 9: Surinam (Breakfast)

City tour of Paramaribo. Here you will find a mosaic of diverse races and cultures. The cacophony of city life is muted by shaded, tree-lined avenues interspersed with seventeenth-century Dutch wooden structures alternated with modern hotels and office buildings. In a unique blend of architecture, cultures and religion, Paramaribo is one of the few places in the world where Muslim mosques, Hindu temples, Jewish synagogues and Christian churches coexist peacefully side by side. Free afternoon.

Meals: B

Day 10: Surinam - Guyana (Breakfast)

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for the return flight to Guyana. Transfer to your hotel.

Meals: B

Day 11: Guyana (Breakfast, lunch and dinner)

Transfer to the Ogle airport for the flight to Karanambu Lodge. This famous Giant Otter rehabilitation centre run by Diane McTurk allows for a deeper appreciation of these magnificent and endangered species. Opportunity to swim with these wonderful mammals.

Meals: B, L & D

Day 12: Guyana (Breakfast, lunch and dinner)

Full day at the Karanambu Lodge. Visits can also be made to nearby ponds for bird watching and to view the Victoria Amazonica, the world's largest water lily and Guyana's national flower. Explore the Rupununi River in search of wild black caiman and the giant arapaima, the largest freshwater fish that can reach up to 10m long. An evening visit to crane pond to see hundreds of ibis, anhinga, heron and egret roosting is a highlight.

Meals: B, L & D

Day 13: Guyana (Breakfast & lunch)

Afternoon transfer to the airstrip for the return flight to Georgetown. Transfer to your hotel.

Meals: B & L

Day 14: Guyana (Breakfast)

City tour of historical Georgetown. Georgetown the chief port and capital and city of Guyana is situated on the bank of the Demerara River Estuary. Most of the buildings in the city are wooden with unique architecture dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. The main street in Georgetown provides several excellent examples of old colonial homes, a prime example of which is the State House, built in 1852. The most famous building must be St. George's Cathedral which is one of the world's tallest freestanding wooden buildings and was consecrated on 1892. At the beginning of the Avenue of the Republic stands the Public Library housed in the Carnegie Building. Other historic buildings along this promenade are the Town Hall, a splendid example of Gothic architecture, and further along are the Victoria Law Courts and St. Andrews Kirk. St. Andrew's is the oldest surviving structure of any church in Guyana. No trip to Georgetown would be complete without a visit to the Botanical Gardens and zoo. The Botanical Gardens houses one of the most extensive collections of tropical flora in the Caribbean and are laid out with ponds, canals, kissing bridges and a bandstand. Over 100 species of Guyanese wildlife can be observed at the Zoo including a wide variety of tropical fishes and birds. The Demerara Harbour Bridge is the longest floating bridge in the world and connects the east and west banks of the Demerara River. Free afternoon.
