Day 1. Lima
Arrival in Lima. Reception and transfer to the hotel.
Day 2. Lima (B)
After breakfast, a city tour of modern and colonial Lima, declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1991. The tour includes a visit to the Cathedral, Main Square, San Francisco Convent and its Catacombs, and the residential areas of San Isidro and Miraflores overlooking the fabulous Pacific Ocean. Return to your hotel.
Day 3. Lima - Ica (B)
Transfer to the bus terminal for the coach trip to Ica, some 4 hours south of Lima. THe journey will take you through the spectacular desert coastal strip of Peru. Arrival to Ica, where you will be dropped off at your hotel for overnight accommodation.
Day 4. Ica – Paracas - Nazca (B)
After breakfast, transfer to the port at Paracas for the boat trip to the Ballestas islands. Commonly referred to as the "little Galapagos", here you will see an amazing concentration of sea birds and sea lions in their natural habitat along with the famous "candelabra" enigma, marked into the desert hillside. This engraving has nothing to the do with the Nazca Lines but is thought to be an old pirate warning over two centuries old. After the boat tour, return to the mainland for the coach transfer to Nazca (about 3 hours). Arrive to Nazca and your hotel.
Day 5. Nazca - Arequipa (B)
Before breakfast, a flight tour over the enigmatic Nazca Lines; gigantic drawings and geometrical figures engraved in the driest desert of Peru and dating back to 250 AD. Drawn throughout over 1000 Km2 of desert on the Pampas of San Jose in Ica, and due to their enormous size and largely unknown origin, leaves an indelible impression on all who visit this most mysterious archaeological site. With representations of animals, such as a spider, a monkey and several birds, they are believed to be an enormous astronomical calendar or possibly an offering to the gods. First discovered in 1550 it was not until the advent of flight, in the 1920's, that the lines were first realised for their significance. The drawings are not in actual desert sand but on small rock debris, varying in length from 150m to 300m. Return to your hotel for breakfast before transferring to the bus terminal for the coach trip to Arequipa. The journey will take around 10 hours and you will arrive late at night or even possibly very early the following morning. Transfer to your hotel.
Day 6. Arequipa (B)
Morning free. In the afternoon, a tour of the "white city’ including a visit to the 16th century convent which is built entirely of volcanic lava. The Misti Volcano stands as a sentinel behind this colonial city. Overnight accommodation in Arequipa.
Day 7. Arequipa - Colca Canyon (B)
After breakfast, journey through some wonderful scenery towards the Colca canyon, witnessing en route groups of wild alpacas, vicuñas and guanacos in their natural habitat. Arrival to Chivay, the main town of the canyon in time for lunch (not included). Transfer to your hotel. Free afternoon for personal leisure.
Day 8. Colca Canyon – Puno (B)
An early start to visit the Colca canyon, the second deepest canyon in the world (the deepest canyon lies only a few kilometres from here). You shall also have an opportunity to see the huge condor; the world’s largest flying bird before starting on the journey by coach to Puno across the altiplano. Lying on the shores of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, Puno is also the folkloric capital of Peru. Arrival and transfer to your hotel.
Day 9. Islands of Lake Titicaca (B & L)
Full day excursion to the islands of Uros and Taquile. Uros, a group of islands made entirely of tortora reeds is home to a small community dating back to a pre-Inca culture. The inhabitants of Taquile are more closely related to the Aymara people of Bolivia than the Quechua Incas of Peru. Lunch on the island. Return to Puno and your hotel.
Day 10. Puno - Cuzco (B & L)
After breakfast, transfer to the terminal for the tourist bus journey across the stunning altiplano to Cuzco. Visiting several archaeological sites along the way including Raqchi, the tallest Inca monument ever built. Arrival to Cuzco and accommodation at your hotel.
Day 11. Cuzco (B)
Free morning. Afternoon guided visit of the four ruins nearby; the Sacsayhuaman Fortress overlooking the city of Cuzco, a pre Inca architectural masterpiece; Kenko, a rock sanctuary whose main attraction is the monolithic altar representing a puma, the red Fortress of Puca-Pucara and Tambomachay, a beautiful fountain fed by a spring forming a series of basins continue to the city of Cuzco; the Main Square, the Cathedral and the Koricancha or Temple of the Sun.
Day 12. Sacred Valley (B & L)
Full-day excursion to the Urubamba, the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Visit the village of Pisac, founded during Colonial times. On Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays the Indians barter their products, and artisans from all over the area sell their woven alpaca wool blankets and ponchos, engraved gourds, antique reproductions and jewellery. On Sundays, it is also the meeting place for the local Mayors of the region, who come dressed in their traditional costumes, to attend morning mass. After a buffet lunch, a visit to Ollantaytambo, the only Inca town which is still inhabited. Explore the ruins above Ollantaytambo before returning to Cuzco via the traditional market town of Chinchero. Return to your hotel.
Day 13. Cuzco - Machu Picchu (B)
An early transfer to the railway station in Poroy for the 6.30/7.00 am train to Aguas Calientes. Arrival to Aguas Calientes and transfer to the bus terminal for the short ride (25 minutes) up to Machu Picchu. You will arrive in time for a guided group visit of the most spectacular ancient city in the world. This fabulous city contains houses, temples, warehouses, a large central square; and all connected by narrow roads and steps that are surrounded by terraces cut into the mountain side. After the tour, free time to enjoy this spiritual wonder. Opportunity for a guided trek (approx 1 hour) up to the sungate (Intipunku), which is a part of the Inca Trail, for a magical view of the sanctuary or alternatively an unguided climb to the top of Wayna Picchu, with a magnificent view of the whole Sanctuary (recommended for fit individuals only). Return to your hotel.
Day 14. Machu Picchu - Cuzco (B)
Opportunity to return to the sanctuary for a more personal appreciation of the Eighth wonder of the world. Return in the afternoon by train to Cuzco and transfer to the hotel of your choice.
Day 15. Cuzco (B)
Free day.
Day 16. Cuzco – Lima (B)
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for the return flight to Lima (not included).
