Altitude:
It is important to remember that many parts of our tour include high altitude locations. Peru is situated in the heart of the Andes; the longest mountain range in the world. Consequently, many significant sites of interest are located at considerable heights above sea level. Our programmes are designed to incorporate acclimatisation periods to ensure a steady progression towards body adaptation. Some people may experience slight discomfort such as a headache but one can never be certain how exposure to high altitude will affect the individual.

Climate:
Peru has an amazing diversity of climates, boasting some 43 different climatic
zones. Weather conditions can vary drastically from region to region. When it is winter in Europe, it is summer in Peru. In the highlands, the best season for trekking and mountaineering is from May to October whilst for the coast the best season is from October to April. In the far north around Mancora, it is warm all year round due to its proximity to the equator.

General Interest: Peru is situated in a geologically active part of the world and is home to many volcanoes including some of the highest mountains in the world; indeed the highest tropical mountain range on the planet. This offers fabulous mountain climbing opportunities for both amateur and professional alike.
Peru's borders with Brazil and Bolivia also cover an amazing expanse of primary rain forest commonly referred to as the Amazon. Boasting an incredible diversity of fauna and flora, Peru is home to Manu National park, which is included on some of our itineraries. They have identified almost 1000 different species of bird just in this park alone. By comparison, the whole North American continent has fewer than 700 species. Peru, in terms of culture, is the single most interesting country in the whole of South America. If your interests are in pre-Spanish culture, then consideration must be given to the following: the Incas, the Nazcas, the Moche, the Chimu and the 1000BC Chavin archaeological sites.

Meals: All meals, unless otherwise stated on your itinerary, are not included in the price of the tour. However, Peru has a large selection of excellent restaurants and Peruvian cuisine is very good and great value for money. So choose from international cuisine to delectable local favourites. To sample unknown fruits in the excellent local markets is a joy in itself. Of course the Incas were the first people ever to cultivate the potato and they claim a staggering 350 different varieties of this humble vegetable.
